JASON HOLT is confident Rangers can maintain their momentum and continue their stunning start to the season after a storming 5-1 success over Queen of the South.

Mark Warburton’s side moved top of the Championship standings as they clinched a deserved triumph at Palmerston to make it eight wins from eight games this term.

The visit of Raith Rovers on league duty this weekend is next on the agenda for the Gers as they look to keep up their impressive run under new boss Warburton.

Former Hearts star Holt was on the scoresheet in Dumfries as goals from Andy Halliday and Barrie McKay and two Martyn Waghorn penalties eased Rangers over the line.

And the midfielder is delighted with the Light Blues’ stunning start as they have burst out of the blocks in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Holt said: “We didn't play as well as we can do, but we still managed a convincing win, which is good.

“We went into half-time with the lead and came out and played some great stuff in the second half.

“It's good that everyone is chipping in with the goals and there's no reliance on one player. They're spread throughout.

“If we can keep the momentum going, the games are coming thick and fast. We can only take it one game at a time.

“We don't think about how we can keep it going. We have to get the message across that we're not looking too far ahead and it really is just one game at a time. Our objective going into every game is three points.

“Since the manager has come in every player has bought into his philosophy and the style of play and I think it shows on the park. I see similarities with Hearts last year.

“The thing that sticks out is the togetherness in the dressing room. If you have that it shows on the park and I think it is showing.”

After Halliday had opened the scoring in the first half, Queens were left with an uphill task when Waghorn converted from the spot just minutes after Derek Lyle saw red for a head butt on defender Rob Kiernan.

Holt killed off any hopes of a great escape from the Doonhamers when he made it 3-0 after collecting a pass from Arsenal loan star Gedion Zelalem.

And the playmaker was pleased to get his name on the score sheet as he netted his second goal of the campaign.

He said: “It's great to have done that because it's a difficult place to come. The aim was to get the three points and we've done that.

“It's great every time you get on the score sheet. The goals have been spread across the team, which is great.

“I finished last season with a few goals so I was hoping to carry that into this year. I wanted to get in amongst the goals and it's going not too badly so I want to keep it up.”

There was little doubt that Rangers deserved their win on the day but Queens were left frustrated at whistler Bobby Madden for the controversial call to send striker Lyle off just minutes into the second half.

There appeared to be little in the coming together on the touchline but it proved costly for James Fowler’s side as Rangers hammered home their advantage.

Holt said: “I didn't see it so I can't really comment. It was a difficult game.

“Going down to 10 men made it hard on them but whether you're up against 11 or 10 men you still have to be professional and do your job. We did that.”
