MARTYN WAGHORN was delighted Rangers got back to winning ways as he fired Mark Warburton’s side to victory over Morton.

The striker hit the first hat-trick of his career at Cappielow as the Light Blues clinched a 4-0 win to move nine points clear at the top of the Championship standings.

Boss Warburton had been irked by some of the criticism his side received in the aftermath of the League Cup loss to St Johnstone last midweek as they suffered their first defeat of the campaign.

But it was a far better afternoon at the office for the Ibrox outfit as James Tavernier also hit the target to see off Jim Duffy’s side on Sunday.

Waghorn has now scored 14 goals in 13 games following his summer switch from Wigan Athletic as he proved his worth at the head of the Gers’ forward line with two neat finishes and his seventh penalty conversion of the campaign.

He said: “I was delighted to get my first career hat-trick but it was a really professional display by the boys.

“We came in for a bit of stick after midweek but we just wanted to get back to basics, do what we do well, come here, put on a good display and get the three points.

“It was nice to be through the middle, it is my preferred position. But I will do a job out wide or wherever the gaffer wants me to play.

“It is based on who we are playing and who were are up against. It was nice to be back through the middle and to get the goals but the three points were crucial.”
