HE has not scored any of the 48 goals Rangers have netted, been handed the Man of the Match champagne or grabbed the headlines.

But Wes Foderingham has played his own part in the Light Blues’ successes so far this season as he has performed when called upon and made his own impression at Ibrox.

While much of the focus has been on the attacking threat posed by Mark Warburton’s free-flowing side, the contribution of his keeper has been just as important.

Foderingham has pulled off crucial saves at crucial times this term, his blocks often forgotten come the final whistle as Rangers have hit the goal trail and added wins to their tally at an impressive rate.

The efforts of the former Swindon shot-stopper have not gone unnoticed, though, and he is keen to continue to contribute when required to help Rangers maintain their momentum in the coming weeks.

“We are the strongest side in this division so more times than not we are going to have the ball and more times than not we are going to be attacking the opposition,” Foderingham said.

“I am just there to do my job when called upon and I have done that so far. If I am called upon more in the coming games, I will be ready.

“If it is a quiet day at the office, fine. All that matters is the team. If the boys need me to make a save then I am pleased to play what part I can for the team.

“I can only concentrate on my job. It is difficult being a Rangers goalkeeper. You need to stay concentrated for 90 minutes.

“You might only have one save to make, but you have to make it. That has been the case in a couple of games and fortunately I have been able to do it.

“Hopefully I can continue in the same fashion. We are a very solid side and we attack well but there will be occasions when the opposition get a shot on goal so it is my job to stay concentrated for the full 90 minutes and to try and make the saves when needed.”

Like all of the new recruits boss Warburton brought to Ibrox in the summer, Foderingham has made a positive first impression on the Light Blue legions.

The style Warburton has instilled in his squad, which places emphasis on the keeper and defensive line playing the ball out from the back and being involved in the attacking phases, has taken time to get accustomed to for some fans.

There have been the odd gasps around the ground when Foderingham has been put under pressure in his area and some have criticised central duo Danny Wilson and Rob Kiernan at times this term.

But Foderingham insists the approach will continue to pay dividends as the core of the Rangers rear guard contribute to team success.

“The two of them have been brilliant for us,” he said.

“Danny has the makings of a really good centre-half, and so does Rob. They have had a good partnership so far and long may that continue.

“Hopefully they can continue to be solid throughout the rest of the season.

“We try and compact the pitch when we are in possession so if the centre-halves squeeze up, I will move up as well. We try and maintain good distances between the lines.

“It can look frightening at times but I can assure you it is a lot calmer than it looks! We work on it in training, it is effective and it works for us.

“If we can keep the ball at the back and have controlled possession, we have more opportunities and hopefully score more goals. We will continue in that same fashion.”

The new Gers stars may have shone on the big stage so far this season, but it is boss Warburton who has captured the imagination of the Ibrox crowd in the opening weeks of the campaign.

The former Brentford manager has overhauled his squad and implemented a new style of play as Rangers have won nine out of nine in the Championship and 13 out of 14 in all competitions this term.

The Light Blues have put down an early title marker and are determined to sprint over the finishing line as attentions turn to the visit of Queen of the South this weekend.

Foderingham said: “That is the manager’s focus and he has said that all along. He takes it one game at a time and he emphasises that to us.

“We put the work in during the week to try and get a result on a Saturday and we have done that so far. We are keen to pick up where we left off.

“We are taking it game by game and if we can keep getting the wins then hopefully the league will come.

“We are just focused on winning the game on Saturday and then we will take it from there.”

While few Gers fans would have known much about Foderingham before his move north of the border, there have been plenty of encouraging signs so far.

After starting his career at Fulham, the keeper has been on the books of five different clubs and has now established himself as first choice at Ibrox.

He met young fans at a Rangers Soccer Schools event yesterday as he took time out to pose for pictures and sign autographs for budding Light Blues, and he is grateful to the reception he has received in Glasgow.

Foderingham said: “It has been brilliant. I didn’t realise how massive it has been until I came up here and the fans have been really welcoming around the city.

“I have really enjoyed it and long may it continue. London is a bigger place so nobody notices you down there. Here, everyone is football mad, and Rangers mad. Everyone has been really welcoming.”
