RANGERS need to bring in at least two new faces in January if they are to make sure they can see off the challenge of Hibs to win the title this season. The two clubs are neck-and-neck at the top of the SPFL Championship, albeit the Ibrox club have a better goal difference and a game in hand. And club legend Derek Johnstone believes manager Mark Warburton should set his sights on recruiting a powerful striker and a holding midfielder to bolster Rangers’ squad for the second half of the campaign.

DJ said: “Bringing in new players now should help stave off Hibs’ challenge and ensure Rangers finish this season as champions. I still think they need a big striker. I know Ryan Hardie is there and he will definitely get his chance soon but they might want a ready-built one to come in to lend some more support to Martyn Waghorn who has often looked best cutting in from the wide areas.

“I also think they need a stronger, holding player in midfield that they maybe don’t have at this time. They’ve got various midfielders who want to get forward but on the break how many goals have Rangers lost when they’ve overcommitted to attack? So we need that holding player, especially with John Eustace not signing, someone who can offer the centre backs a bit more protection.”
