MARK WARBURTON admits defensive and midfield reinforcements are his top priorities for the January transfer window.

The Rangers boss overhauled his squad during the summer and has taken the Light Blues to the top of the Championship after an impressive start to the campaign.

He will be backed by the Ibrox board in the transfer market early next year and he is keen to bolster his ranks to strengthen once again for the title run-in.

He said: “I think we have to look at players who can play a couple of positions.

“Defensive midfield is one area to make sure we have cover, left-side of defence another.

“Any team is also always looking for quality in terms of attacking areas.

“But we have to find players who can deal with the expectation of playing at Ibrox. We have to check character as well as quality.”

The Ibrox crowd have been delighted with the new style of play Warburton and assistant David Weir have implemented this season as Rangers have turned in a series of eye-catching performances so far this term.

After a stunning opening few weeks, Warburton’s side have found goals harder to come by in recent times as teams have adopted a defensive setup to stop them in their tracks.

The Light Blues are ahead of title rivals Hibernian on goal difference having played one game fewer than Alan Stubbs’ side and Warburton is pleased with the attacking intent his side have shown.

He said: “If you look at our full-backs, at Jason Holt, then you see the goals are coming from around the park.

“One pleasing aspect is we are scoring from various areas – our goal difference is plus 31, we don’t have anyone near us on that, and that’s not a bad place to be.”
