DANNY WILSON is confident the Rangers squad are learning to cope with the demands of being at Ibrox and are developing a winning mentality under boss Mark Warburton.

The Light Blues booked their place in the Petrofac Training Cup final with a 4-0 win over St Mirren on Saturday as strikes from Jason Holt, Kenny Miller and Martyn Waghorn and a Sean Kelly own goal set up a showdown with Peterhead.

Warburton’s side have seen their lead at the top of the Championship whittled down in recent weeks but they have a chance to open up a three point gap over title rivals Hibernian when they host Dumbarton tomorrow night.

Wilson won three honours with the Gers during his first spell at Ibrox and reckons the current squad are showing they have what it takes to be successful this season.

He said: "I think every player that comes into football wants to be a winner, it's just sometimes you are not allowed to be because of the other team.

“We are trying to get into the rhythm of winning and for the most part we have done that.

“The criticism that has come our way has been a little bit over the top because in the games we hadn't won, we didn't play badly, it was just the result didn't go our way.

“But it's a results business and we are expected to win. The pressure's higher because of the league that we are in and that's something we are going to have to deal with.

"We're all fully aware of what's expected at the club. Maybe the players who have come in have not been under as much scrutiny at other clubs, but they learn quickly and embrace it.

“We know ourselves if we have come off a performance that hasn't been quite up to scratch. We're all hard of ourselves in the right way and that can only be good for us."

After storming out of the blocks in the opening weeks of the campaign, Rangers have found the going tougher in recent times as they have struggled to maintain their high performance levels.

It took a late flurry of goals to add a shine to the score line against the Saints as Rangers’ possession and patience finally paid off.

And Wilson, who returned to the starting line-up in place of Dominic Ball, is pleased Warburton’s side are able to dig deep to add wins to their tally this term.

He said: “It is what it is. People will always say ‘Rangers should be top of the Championship’ or ‘Rangers should be in the final of the Petrofac’.

“So we are in a no-win situation, but that’s just something that we need to accept and show the right mentality to deal with it and get our heads round it.

“But it’s not as easy as just turning up every week and having it handed to you. Teams are going to make it difficult for us.

“If I was turning up to play against Rangers I wouldn’t just roll over and accept defeat.

“But credit to us because I think, by and large, we have shown the right mind-set to deal with that and focus on ourselves and getting good results this season.”
