MARK WARBURTON is delighted Martyn Waghorn is shining in the Ibrox spotlight – and insists he isn’t fazed by the prospect of his star striker attracting admiring glances from south of the border.
First half goals from Lee Wallace and Barrie McKay had set the Gers on course for victory before Waghorn ensured Dean Brett’s free-kick was a mere consolation with a neat finish and penalty brace after the break.
He said: “He’s dealing with the expectation here, Martyn. He comes here as a striker for a club like Rangers and the crowd expect - quite rightly - that he delivers and he’s doing that.
“He’s enjoying it and getting the rewards and the demands are always here.
“What Waggy has to know is the environment is right for him to keep on developing and he gets his rewards on the pitch.
“It showcases Martyn Waghorn - he needs that, to build his own self- belief to recognise how far he can go in the game. He’s only just turned 25.
“The more attraction our players receive from down south the better, the harder we work to keep them here.
“This is a fantastic club, a great environment and they’re enjoying their football and their families are settled. For a player to leave here it has to be the right move for him and on our terms and no-one else’s.”
Warburton handed a second half bow to Harry Forrester against the Blue Brazil after he completed a deal at Ibrox last week.
Brentford midfielder Toumani Diagouraga remains one of a host of names on Warburton’s wish list this month and the Gers boss is expecting further transfer activity.
He said: “A couple of young ones are going out and we need to work on them this week and we’re still working on one or two targets we want to bring in. Apart from that, we’re in good shape.
“I’m never going to talk about another club’s players - when we conclude our business we can talk about it but right now we have a number of targets because the nature of this game is you have to have options one, two, three and four.
“There are a number of players we’re looking at and work being done and hopefully we can bring them here.
“If not, the squad is top of the league and in the next round of the cup. The squad is strong and we have shown our quality, hopefully.”
