FOR a side who have scored in all but one match this season, have won the vast majority of their games and one that is bearing down on the 100-goal barrier already, it seems strange to point out the requirement for more quality and options in the final third.

That is the solution Mark Warburton has found to one of Rangers’ problems, albeit a small one, with the latest additions to his squad, though.

Despite Rangers’ impressive strike rate in front of goal, and the free-flowing style that Warburton has introduced at Ibrox, the Light Blues were in need of further reinforcements during the January transfer window.

The short-term deals for Harry Forrester and Hearts winger Billy King will strengthen the Gers until the end of the campaign, while the move for Michael O’Halloran, Warburton hopes, will have long-term benefits for his side.

While Barrie McKay has been a regular feature on the left flank, the opposite wide berth, which has been occupied by Martyn Waghorn and Kenny Miller in recent weeks, is very much up for grabs to allow both forwards to battle it out for the central striking role.

Legendary Ibrox wing king Willie Henderson has been impressed with the way Warburton’s side have gone about their business this term as they have hit the goal trail and racked up the wins.

And he reckons the additions of speedy and tricky wide men could be the final piece of the Gers attacking jigsaw as sights are set on the Championship title and cup glory.

“There has been such a vast improvement in the team and the players the manager brought up from England have done so well,” said the former Gers star.

“You have to say that Waghorn has been excellent, he has scored a huge amount of goals.

“For a striker to score 27 goals at this stage of the season in the modern game, when we don’t play with orthodox wingers, is a great achievement.

“There isn’t always the service coming from the wide positions that strikers had years and years ago. To score goals the way he is scoring them is great.

“There is a difference in a lot of players, it is really positive and the squad is strong.

“I think the deals will be good for the club. It will be good to get more play on the wings from more orthodox wingers. I think that will be a big help and it will help the centre-forward as well.”

The arrivals of King and O’Halloran have given boss Warburton food for thought in the coming weeks as he looks to keep his side on track for a Premiership place.

But, in McKay, he already has a wide man in fine form and playing at the top of his game as he has come to the fore at Ibrox this term.

The 21-year-old is close to committing his future to the Gers and Ibrox legend Henderson is confident there is plenty more to come from the Auchenhowie graduate.

He said: “I think Barrie is a big example of a player that really wasn’t going anywhere here, hence why he went out on loan.

“He was brought into the squad by the manager in the summer and he has instilled confidence in him and added things to his game. He is doing really well.

“The step up next season will be another test for the players. I would like to see Barrie staying and I think it is in his best interests to do so.

“He has an opportunity to stay and I am sure he wants to stay. He has been away at other clubs and, having been away, he will know what Rangers means. Let’s hope we can get things sorted out.”

After failing to find the target for the first time this term as they were held by Kilmarnock on Saturday, Rangers will return to Championship action this weekend when they face Alloa.

With the finishing line in sight, Warburton’s side remain in pole position in the title race thanks to a turnaround in results and performances after a costly blip last year.

And Henderson, who spent 12 successful years at Ibrox and became a hero to Gers fans, is delighted to see the progress that has been made this term.

“I think Rangers supporters need to be really happy with the change and everything that is going on at Ibrox just now,” he said.

“The manager has come up here and has instilled a level of fitness in the players that wasn’t there before and the system they are playing plays to players' strengths. I think it has been a breath of fresh air.

“Some of the people were getting depressed with what they were watching, some of the attitudes were shocking.

“What they are seeing now is so different. People are looking forward to coming to the games, there is a bounce in their step and they are getting value.

“This isn’t finished yet and I am sure Mark will be keen to impress that onto the players. The job is not finished yet. But if we can continue the way we are going then we will be in good shape.”

The silverware may not quite be secured but it could only be a matter of time before it is in Rangers’ grasps if they can keep up their current momentum in the Championship.

After four years outside the top flight, Rangers will have to the hit the ground running next term should they finally make it back to the Premiership.

And Henderson knows more work will need to be done to ensure Warburton’s side are in shape for the challenge of competing at that level once again.

He said: “The people that are running the club will know that. If we win the league this year and go up to the Premiership, they will know, and the manager will know, that they will need other players brought into the squad.

“We need to be in a situation to get off and running right away. Rangers are never used to being third or fourth.

“The big thing is to get out of this league, get into the Premiership and things will be organised after that for having a go at the Premiership.”
