MARTYN WAGHORN is out to smash through the 30-goal barrier as he races back to fitness for Rangers.

The Ibrox forward currently sits on 28 goals for the campaign, a number he has been stuck at ever since he picked up a knee injury in February.

He has been on the road to recovery for nine weeks but yesterday had his first contact training session with the rest of his Rangers team-mates.

Two Championship ties and a Scottish Cup final lie between him and his landmark goal tally, and the 26-year-old is gunning for the final strikes that will top off a momentous season.

He said: “There’s still a chance to hit 30 goals with a couple of league games to go and a final approaching. It would be nice and I can keep dreaming!

“But it’s not just about me. We’ve got wee Baz on the wing, Kenny Miller who has rolled back the years and been fantastic, we’ve got Tav and skipper bombing forward in the wings and strength in the middle.

“I had my first contact training session with the boys on Friday so everything seems to be going in the right direction for the Scottish Cup final. I’ve got a lot to thank the physios for and the boys behind the scenes who really helped me.”

Rangers welcome Alloa this weekend to take on an already-relegated Wasps.

Ibrox could be the location that sees Waghorn finally return to Light Blue, but the man from South Shields is prepared to trust Warburton’s judgment as the Rangers manager ponders throwing his star striker back in.

He added: “I will see if the gaffer thinks I can maybe get involved in the squad and we will go from there.

“Everything is going well and I’m on course for the final so I’m really pleased.”

Waghorn was nominated, along with captain Lee Wallace, for PFA Scotland Championship Player of the Year earlier this week.

It is a an illustrious prize the Gers skipper has already claimed in League One and League Two, and Warburton was keen to praise both men who have played a pivotal role in Rangers’ success this season.

“On the pitch he [Wallace] has been outstanding all season and his level of consistency has been first class,” said his manager.

“The impact he has off the pitch here and at Ibrox has been first class too.

“On Martyn, he has done exceptionally well. To score 28 goals in the period of time he did was outstanding, and he thoroughly deserves it.

“We are delighted for him and he was desperately disappointed with his injury, but his rehab has been first class.

“So I’m delighted for the pair of them and I’m sure the rest of the squad will rightfully give them their congratulations, as well as know there are five, six or seven others in the dressing room who could equally be named as well.”
