RANGERS celebrated their Championship coronation at Ibrox this afternoon – but couldn’t mark the occasion with victory over Alloa.

Glasgow Times:

Mark Warburton's side were held to a 1-1 draw by the Wasps as James Tavernier cancelled out Michael Duffy’s opener.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the champions as they missed a series of chances and failed to bounce back from their defeat to Hibs in midweek.

Glasgow Times:

But it was still a day to remember for Warburton and his players as they got their hands on the second tier silverware and celebrated with the Light Blue legions.

The Alloa players lined up for a guard of honour to mark Rangers’ Championship title achievement but then set about looking to spoil the party at Ibrox.

There was a round of applause in the second minute to remember Gers legend Sandy Jardine but the home crowd were then stunned as the Wasps took a shock lead.

It was another slack goal for Rangers to lose, Andy Halliday seeing a pass to keeper Wes Foderingham come up well short and fall to Duffy.

The winger, on loan from Celtic, finished well from the edge of the area as the visitors found themselves with a surprise advantage after eight minutes.

A long-range Duffy effort after the half hour mark aside, that was all the Wasps could create as they found themselves camped in.

Rangers were relentless in their attacking phases as they looked for an equaliser but a succession of chances came and went as moves broke down and frustrations grew.

Glasgow Times:

Jason Holt saw a weak effort easily saved by keeper Scott Gallagher on his Ibrox return before he ballooned another strike high and wide of target.

Midfield counterpart Gedion Zelalem stung Gallagher’s palms with a drive from the edge of the area and Tavernier came close either side of a Nicky Clark strike that was ruled out for offside.

There was a Halliday effort that was pulled well wide of target, a low Zelalem curler that was easily held and a couple of strikes from Billy King.

Glasgow Times:

But there was no breakthrough for Rangers as Warburton’s side saw their efforts continue to go unrewarded and the scoreboard remained somehow untroubled.

With three minutes of the half remaining, Rangers should have made it 1-1. Barrie McKay was fouled by former Ger Kyle McAusland as he burst into the box and referee Craig Charleston pointed to the spot.

It was Halliday who stepped up but the midfielder, who slotted home against Celtic in the shoot-out last Sunday, couldn’t hit the target from twelve yards as his strike went wide of Gallagher’s right hand post.

Just seconds before the whistle, Rangers finally got their goal, though. Halliday had a hand in it as his chipped ball found Tavernier and the right-back headed home to finally give the Ibrox crowd something to cheer.

Rangers picked up where they left off after the break and King was twice denied either side of another Halliday effort as he looked to make up for his spot-kick miss.

Glasgow Times:

It was soon time for Warburton to turn to his bench as Dean Shiels and Kenny Miller replaced Holt and Clark in a bid to inspire the Light Blues to victory.

Rangers continued to dominate but Alloa were still standing firm as frustrations grew.

With 15 minutes left, youngster Liam Burt was given his second appearance for the Gers as he replaced King on what was his final appearance at Ibrox before he returns to Hearts in the summer.

McKay tried his luck from distance as he attempted to score a third screamer in a week after his efforts against Celtic and Hibernian before Burt was denied at the near post by Gallagher.

Glasgow Times:

Rangers continued to push for a winner but Tavernier couldn’t hit the target after he combined well with Wallace inside the Alloa area before Zelalem couldn’t convert from a promising position.

Rob Kiernan saw a shot deflected wide in the final seconds and there was no late winner for Warburton’s side as they were held at home.

It didn’t put too much of a dampener on the party, though, as the Light Blues squad celebrated their title win in front of a crowd of over 50,000 at Ibrox.
