SOME people reckon it is all about cash. Kenny Miller insists it is about character.

Mark Warburton will venture into the transfer market for the third time as Rangers boss this summer as he looks to add strength and depth to a squad that is on the brink of landing three medals in its first campaign together.

If the Englishman can maintain the same success rate as he has enjoyed to date, the Light Blues will not be far away from being able to challenge for the Premiership crown next term.

There is no doubt that the Ibrox first team pool requires investment. But Miller believes it is the men and not the money that has to be the main focus in the coming months.

He said: “There’s absolutely no doubt and no disrespect to anyone here but we need to strengthen.

“If you look at the numbers we’ve had; four outfield players on the bench against Celtic, we’ve got loan players and guys who are out of contract that still has to be resolved, so we’re definitely light on numbers.

Glasgow Times:

“So we need to strengthen. We’re making a step up and there’s no doubt the quality of the player we’re looking at will have stepped up as well. But listen we’ve got full trust in the management.

“A lot of things are said about potential numbers that we need to spend but I don’t think it’s anything to do with money. We need to get the right character and right quality of player in.

“There is no doubt the manager has shown that this season with the players we’ve got.

“We could have been sitting here this time last year talking about Waghorn, Tavernier, Foderingham, Kiernan, Halliday, Holt and people would have been saying they are guys getting released from this club or that club and with the level they are playing at can they make it at a big club like Rangers? Well they’ve proved this year they can.

“I know a lot has been said about the Player of the Year but I genuinely believe we could have had six guys with a case to be player of the year.

“I thought some of the lads have been superb throughout the season, the lads who have played the majority of games have never let us down.

“So we’ll improve on that and we need to strengthen, get more numbers in but we’ve got the core of a good team here.

Glasgow Times:

“If we can get the right character in, it’s not about money, it’s not about spending £20 or 30 million, that’s just a number getting banded about.

“If we get the right quality with the right character to add to this dressing room, there is no telling how far we can go.”

Throughout their climb back up the Scottish league ladder, questions have continually been raised about how far Rangers are from the top teams in our game.

Cup wins over Kilmarnock, Dundee and Celtic this term have raised expectation levels amongst the Ibrox crowd as they eye a shot at the Premiership title next term.

Warburton has overhauled the Gers squad for a relatively modest sum to date and Miller is confident his manager can repeat the trick once again.

He said: “Look at the players we brought in last season. For me that shows he has the expertise and the knowledge along with Frank McParland and Davie Weir.

“The gaffer looks at the analysis side of things as well when he’s going to sign a player. It’s not just a case of watching a game of football and trying to judge a player’s attributes on that.

“So I’ve absolutely no doubt he’ll get the right players into the squad.

“Being realistic, are we going to go and spend £4million on a player?

“Listen, I don’t know, I don’t know what the situation is. But if I was a betting man I’d probably say no.

“I’m not interested in quality and we’ll see that with the lads whop are brought in. It’s about how they can incorporate into that dressing room.

“The one thing that’s come out in the last few weeks has been how tight our dressing room is and how united and focused we are on where we want to go.

“We don’t want different characters coming in who could harm that harmony that we’ve got.”

With Accrington Stanley pair Matt Crooks and Josh Windass already on board for next season, Warburton will look to complete another handful of deals to improve his squad for the new campaign.

The Gers gaffer will again look to keep the numbers tight, while giving his Murray Park kids the chance to make a step up.

Celtic boss Ronny Deila admitted last week that he has signed too many players as his Parkhead squad has become bloated in recent months.

And Miller believes Warburton’s approach will prove beneficial for Rangers once again as he puts his faith in a tried and trusted group to deliver silverware at Ibrox.

He said: “What goes on at other clubs, we can’t comment on. But what I can say is that if I had the choice of a squad of 34 or a squad of 20 then I know the answer.

“Listen, at times we’ve looked light on numbers, there’s no getting away from that this year.

“But if you look at our squad list every week, pretty much every fit player who has been available has been involved.

“Listening to the manager and the way her speaks, he talks about a pathway to the first-team and how everybody needs to see it.

“When you have a squad of 30 you’ve got 19 guys who are not playing every week.

“I don’t think that can be good for team spirit. Definitely a lot of guys would be broken by that because you train every day towards something at the end of that week.

“If you know you’ve not got that it can be disheartening to a footballer.

“So for me the way our manager has gone has worked great for us.”
