FORMER Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty hasn't taken part in Northern Ireland training as he recovers from injury ahead of their Euro 2016 opener.

Michael O'Neill's side face Poland in the first game of their campaign on Sunday and risk being without their top scorer, but the manager insists Lafferty's groin problem isn't serious.

The 28-year-old, who won three Scottish league titles while with the Gers, pulled up in training yesterday with a muscular problem and was only able to work on an exercise bike this morning.

He watched on from a balcony as the rest of the squad prepared for the tournament at their team base in Saint-Georges-de-Reneins.

But O'Neill remains confident that it won't be a serious setback for the striker, who fired his country to the competition with seven goals in qualifying.

"It's fine, it's precautionary, we have no major concerns there," he said.

"It's a little twist, but on examination we don't expect any major issues at all. We're just being careful, we're more concerned about the thunder and lightning, to be honest!

"He just twisted it a little bit there when he slipped, the pitch is hard. Those little situations are always liable to happen, no major concerns there at all."
