It is interesting that Mark Warburton has said that he won’t look to use the loan market this season, and I think his policy of looking for permanent signings that he can develop is the right one.

Last season was different of course, because he had to get Rangers up and that is what the board told him. Rangers had to go up, they couldn’t afford another season in the Championship and I think everyone was well aware of that.

So you couldn’t blame him for bringing in some talented youngsters from down south to supplement the squad.

Mark has got friends and contacts down south, and at the time those connections really worked for him.

I can understand fully though why he has changed tact this year. Now Rangers are in the big league they will be looking to build a side that can compete at the top end of that table.

He has a lot of good young players already, and now he has brought in some really experienced heads to help them along, which will be needed in the Premiership.

I’d be very surprised if any loan signings come in at all, because Mark Warburton I’m sure will be looking to now build a Rangers team for the future.

In America you saw young Tom Walsh, Robbie McRorie and Ryan Hardie getting game-time and doing well, so the emphasis quite rightly now will be on developing talent for Rangers rather than for anyone else.

You can’t build a side when you have the upheaval of loan signings coming and going every year.

One of the manager’s key strengths from his time at Brentford was in developing young talent, and I think we will see that now at Ibrox with the experienced players in place to take a bit of the burden off of them.
