MARK WARBURTON is pleased to see Martyn Waghorn get back on the Rangers goal trail after he made it two from two against Annan on Tuesday night.

The striker clinched the points for the Gers in their Betfred Cup tie as he collected a pass from Lee Hodson and finished well with 16 minutes remaining at Ibrox.

It came just days after Waghorn opened his account this term as he hit the winner in the 2-0 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park.

Waghorn was the main source of goals for Warburton’s side last season as he enjoyed a productive first campaign in Scottish football following his switch from Wigan Athletic.

He would end the campaign with 28 strikes to his credit as a knee injury kept him out of action for several weeks and denied him a chance to break the 40 barrier.

And Warburton is confident the 26-year-old will rise to the challenge as the Gers set their sights on the Premiership title this term.

He said: “You saw him on Tuesday night and you see a player who is the ultimate professional. He missed three months of the season and he has been working hard in training.

“Everything he does in terms of his gym work, his body weight is getting better every day because he is a top professional.

“It rubs off on the other players but they are all top class pros – Miller, Wallace, Holt, Halliday.

“It’s a really strong group in terms of their character and how they conduct themselves.

“It’s one of the best David and I have seen and the senior pros mention it as well.

“I’m not going to turn round and give a headline that he’ll score 30 goals but Waggy has come into the squad on Saturday and showed his desire and scored again.

“Two games and two goals, so it’s a great start but he knows it’s a different level in terms of quality defenders. But he is a good player and I’m sure he will score a few this season.”
