MARK WARBURTON is pleased with how is Rangers squad are shaping up ahead of the new campaign as the Light Blues prepare for their final pre-season outing this afternoon.

The Gers saw off Motherwell, Annan, East Stirlingshire and Stranraer in the Betfred Cup as they clinched top spot in Group F and progressed to the last 16 of the competition.

A friendly fixture with Premier League newcomers Burnley is next on the agenda for Warburton’s side as the countdown continues to the big kick-off.

Rangers will begin their bid for the top flight title against Hamilton Accies next weekend and the Ibrox boss is satisfied with a productive summer for his squad.

Warburton said: “Our fitness is good, we don’t want to hurry things unnecessarily, but our fitness is good and we are looking forward to the test at the weekend.

“Hopefully we get a busy Ibrox for what will be a good test, but then we have a full week of training ahead and we will use that to go into the Hamilton game when the season starts.

“Everything is focused on that and we are in good shape. So far so good, but a lot of work still to be done.

“It is really important to have that full seven days. Our programme will be that the players will have Sunday off and Wednesday off.

“We will recover on Monday, work very hard on Tuesday, slightly less harder on Thursday and build into the game. We are looking forward to it.

“The squad is in good shape. One or two small knocks. Jason Holt and Josh Windass will both be back, maybe Jason for next week. We are in good shape.

“Matt was running on the grass [on Thursday] morning so hopefully he is two weeks away from joining the squad again. Obviously he will have to catch up with his fitness.

“Physically and technically he is a very gifted player so we are looking forward to welcoming him back and getting him involved in the training.”
