THE sights and sounds of Ibrox are as special for Johnny Hubbard today as they were when he first walked through the famous doors in 1949.

And the Rangers legend is delighted he will be watching Premiership football once again next term after seeing the Light Blues work their way back to the top flight of our game.

The ‘Penalty King’ spent ten years in Glasgow after making the move from South Africa as a teenager to work alongside legendary boss Bill Struth.

Hubbard still makes the trip to Ibrox from his home in Ayrshire to see Rangers in action and was in the stands for the friendly clash with Burnley on Saturday.

More than six decades on from his first sight of the hallowed turf, he still has an affection for the stadium and the club he fell in love with at first sight.

Hubbard said: “I always come to the home games. The only away game I go to is Ayr United, because I played for them as well. But I support Rangers.

“When I came here from South Africa, I said as long as I was playing football I would stay here. I was with Rangers for ten years and then I fell out with the manager.

“I went to Bury and was there for three wonderful years but my head and heart was still with Rangers. I came back to Scotland to play for Ayr but I always remained a Rangers supporter.

“Clyde were desperate to get me. A scout came to the house and said they would give me £1000 signing on fee and £20 per week wages.

“I had already given my word to Rangers and I wouldn’t go back to that. Rangers was £12 per week, £10 in the summer.

“Rangers have never been out of my mind. When Ally was manager, I offered my services if required to talk to the boys about the club.

“I would like to let them know what it is like to come to Rangers. I was 18, I came from 6,000 miles away and I stayed for ten years.

"I would never have left but unfortunately Mr Symon and I fell out.

“I loved my time at Rangers and I still love the club. I am delighted Rangers are back in the top league once again and I will still come to the games this season.”
