MATT GILKS is confident Rangers are back on the right track ahead of their trip to Aberdeen on Sunday after a 5-0 Betfred Cup win at Ibrox.

Mark Warburton’s side have faltered in the Premiership in recent weeks as their top flight title dreams have suffered blows against Kilmarnock, Celtic and Ross County.

But the Gers returned to winning ways on Tuesday night as they booked their place at Hampden with a comfortable victory over Queen of the South.

A key clash with the Dons is next on the Gers’ agenda and keeper Gilks is relishing the Pittodrie showdown on Sunday.

He said: “We take this as a positive result, we are going to watch this game back, and look at the good points and if there are any bad points out of it, then hopefully not go through that again.

“It is momentum, a clean sheet on Saturday, a clean sheet [on Tuesday night], so hopefully we can get another clean sheet on Sunday.

“Clean sheets builds confidence in the goalkeeper and the back four, defensive midfielders, it spreads confidence.

“If we are keeping clean sheets then we will have opportunities at the other end. Hopefully we can put a few away in the league as well.

“I got a mention about that (the rivalry) as well. Obviously I got told about the Rangers v Celtic one too.

“But I have played in the Preston v Blackpool derby... it is good for the game.

“It adds a little bit of spice to it. I hope the fans go there in full voice.”

Gilks made his fourth appearance in Light Blue against the Doonhamers and kept another clean sheet as Warburton’s side eased into the next round.

He has been largely untroubled in his League Cup outings against Annan, East Stirlingshire, Peterhead and the Doonhamers and is likely to lose his place to glove rival Wes Foderingham when Rangers return to Premiership duty this weekend.

The Light Blues will discover their semi-final rivals when the draw is made tonight and the 34-year-old is keen to play at the National Stadium.

Gilks said: “I think this is, I'm playing the cup games at the minute.

“Semi-final coming up, I will expect to play that, and obviously the final.

“Wes is doing well in the league. The manager has said to me that is how it is going to be at the minute and I am happy to go along with anything he says.

“It is still nice to get out there on the pitch, play at Ibrox and get a great result, a clean sheet as a goalkeeper is what you are after basically.”
