MATT GILKS hopes he gets a chance to become a Hampden hero as he eyes a starting spot against Celtic on Sunday.

Mark Warburton’s side face their Old Firm rivals for a place in the Betfred Cup final as they bid to make amends for their 5-1 Premiership collapse last month.

Gilks has featured four times for the Light Blues in knock-out action this term and is competing with Wes Foderingham for the gloves this weekend.

He has yet to concede a goal in his outings Annan, East Stirling, Peterhead and Queen of the South and the former Scotland keeper is eager to play his part at the National Stadium.

“This would be one of the biggest games I have played in if I was to start, I have played at Wembley a couple of times in the Championship Play-off Final and won international caps but this would definitely be up there,” Gilks told RangersTV.

“I’ve never actually played at Hampden; I have been involved with the Scotland set-up there but never come on.

“I am looking forward to it, the Old Firm atmosphere was great at Celtic Park and the home crowd at Ibrox are fantastic on a weekly basis.

“I have played big games before and you soak it in up until the whistle goes and then you have a job to do.

“You can block it out, you are playing the game within itself and you forget what is going on around you.

“I was surprised by the intensity of the Old Firm up close, both sets of supporters were up for the game, which I’m sure they will be on Sunday.

“There is obviously a fierce rivalry between the two sides and the atmosphere is going to be electric but we’ll just be focussed on the game.”
