ALLY MCCOIST has urged Lee Wallace to continue to commit himself to the Scotland cause after earning his ninth international cap at Wembley.

The Rangers defender has missed out on several squads in recent years as he has helped the Light Blues climb back through the leagues and clinch their Premiership return.

But Wallace was ready when called upon against England last week as he started at left-back following injuries to Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson.

The performance of the Ibrox skipper was one of the few positives for Gordon Strachan to take as his side suffered a 3-0 defeat to leave their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

And former Gers boss McCoist hopes there is plenty more to come from the 29-year-old as he eyes further appearances for his country.

He said: “Lee made a lot of sacrifices, one being his Scotland career for sure.

“I watched the game last week and I was delighted for him. I thought he played well, especially going forward as you would expect.

“I was really pleased for him and it was well deserved. I knew he could come in and play at that level and he proved me right.

“It would have been easy for him to walk away from Rangers during that time, many did.

“In a day when a lot of players say, ‘enough, that’ll do me’, Lee Wallace has shown a tremendous attitude.

“He hasn’t thrown the toys out of the pram and instead said, ‘ok, I wasn’t good enough this time, I’ll work hard to make sure I’m picked in the next squad’.

“In team sports, I don’t think you should give up on your country — quite the opposite.

“You call it a day when your country decides they don’t need you anymore.”
