THE Ian Cathro era at Hearts begins against Rangers on Saturday and it will be fascinating to see how he does in his first job in management.

I am someone who likes to give people a chance, whether that is a chairman, director, manager, coach or player.

I think you have to be positive about people and give them a chance to show what they can do.

Ian is someone who has been talked about for a few years now and we know about his work at Dundee United. He has been in Portugal and Spain and was part of Rafa Benitez’s backroom team at Newcastle.

So he has been about as a coach, but he has never been a manager before and he is now faced with a completely different challenge. Only time will tell if he is up to it.

He is now in charge of a group of players and it is about how he gets the message across to his squad on the training ground.

At the end of the day, he will be judged like any other manager. If you are winning games then you will be a success, if you are not then he won’t be there for very long.

He is a fresh face in the game and he has brought Austin MacPhee with him. He talks a great game as well and we will see how they work together.

The Hearts fans will see the team playing every week and they will know whether it is working or not. I hope they give them a chance, though.

In Scotland, there are a lot of people that don’t like change, they don’t like someone coming in and doing something differently.

Ian said himself he wants the attitude before every game to be that Hearts can win it. It might not happen, but he wants to instil his way of thinking.

If it works, it might open the door for more people like him to come in and follow their lead.

I wish them well, but not on Saturday when they face Rangers.
