DAVID WEIR insists he isn’t stung by the criticism of Rangers’ defensive capabilities as he strives for further improvement at Ibrox.

The performances of the Light Blues back four have come under the spotlight once again this term as Mark Warburton’s side have toiled in the top flight.

And assistant manager Weir hopes his stoppers can silence their critics and help Rangers achieve their Premiership ambitions this term.

He said: “I don’t take it personally. That is the nature of the game.

“If you are not top of the league and not winning every week you get criticism.

“I think we can look at ourselves as a team and say that we have not scored enough goals and we have probably conceded too many.

“That is the life of a coach, the life of being a football player. That is the nature of the beast.

“Our job as coaches is to try and make the players better, make the team better and eradicate the mistakes and try and capitalise on the opportunities. That is the nature of our job.

“Do I take it personally? No, I don’t. I work hard every day to make it better and that is all you can do.”

Boss Warburton added Clint Hill, Philippe Senderos and Lee Hodson to his ranks in the summer as he prepared for the new Premiership campaign.

Veteran Hill is set to be rewarded with a new contract for next term alongside Kenny Miller and Weir said: “He has been great and you can see by his performances that he has stood up to the test of being here.

“He has enjoyed the role of helping the players as well and Kenny has been exactly the same. Kenny has been fantastic day in day out, his message to the players, the way he helps them improve.

“When you bring in young players, you have got to have senior players who they can look up to, who can help them and advise them and talk to them.

“The environment that we try and create allows that and they have been worth their weight in gold in helping the lads improve and being a part of making us better.”
