IAN FERGUSON hopes Rangers boss Mark Warburton can shop smart and turn unknown quantities into Ibrox stars.

The Light Blues boss has added Jon Toral and Emerson Hyndman to his squad so far this month and could go back into the transfer market to bolster his ranks once again before the transfer window closes.

Despite overhauling his squad in the summer as eleven players arrived at Ibrox, Warburton has seen his side struggle on their return to the Premiership.

The Gers are 19 points adrift of Old Firm rivals Celtic in the top flight standings and have lost all three derby duels with Brendan Rodgers’ side so far this season.

There has been as much focus on the gap off the park as the one it in recent weeks as former Ibrox managers Walter Smith and Stuart McCall have called for further investment in the Light Blues squad.

But nine-in-a-row hero Ferguson believes Warburton will have to prove himself by recruiting at the other end of the market and unearthing up-and-coming talents.

He said: “Celtic’s budgets are way beyond our budgets but we have got to find bargains and find quality players.

“Rangers paid a lot of money for me, I think it was £850,000. Was I worth that? I didn’t think I was worth that. But at the end of the day they paid it.

“Players were up against me week in week out and I was against players who were valued less but they gave me a hell of a game.

“Money is not everything and it doesn’t mean everything. It is having that will to win, that work ethic.

“You have to be technically good and know how to play the game, but money doesn’t buy you what is in a player. Money doesn’t buy you success.

“Rangers have to look to pick up bargains. Look at Celtic with Dembele. They got a bargain at £500,000 and now people are talking about £20million for him.

“Tom Rogic is another one when he left Australia. They got him for peanuts and now he is worth millions.

“Rangers need to try and pick up players that fit into the way of playing and into the structure there. Hopefully Mark and Davie can do that and bring some success back to the club.”
