Motherwell boss Mark McGhee has confirmed is ready to offer Michael O'Halloran a way out of his Rangers frustrations.

The winger cost Gers £500,000 when he joined from St Johnstone last season but has made just five Ladbrokes Premiership starts for Mark Warburton's side so far this term.

Now McGhee - whose side travel to Glasgow to take on the Light Blues in the fourth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup on Saturday - is hoping to take advantage.

Press Association Sport understands Well have made an offer to take the 26-year-old on loan for the rest of the campaign but face competition from rival top-flight sides.

The Fir Park outfit - who are also chasing Forrest Green midfielder Elliott Frear - are still waiting for a response from Rangers, but McGhee is keen.

The Steelmen boss said: "He would be one of the names that we'd definitely be interested in, but we've had no definitive answer that either he is available or that he will be coming here."

Another Ibrox wideman could also be on the move after reports on Friday linked Barrie McKay with a £6million move to German side Leipzig.

McGhee has worked with the Gers talisman in his capacity as assistant to Scotland boss Gordon Strachan and thinks a switch to the Bundesliga would be perfect for the 22-year-old - especially if it were to be sealed before his side's cup clash with Gers.

"Would I encourage that? Yes - I think he should go this afternoon," joked McGhee, who had a spell with Hamburg during his playing days. "Maybe Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace could go as well.

"When you look at Oliver Burke and the young players they are bringing in, Leipzig seem to have a really exciting model.

"For any young player going to place like that, especially in a league like the Bundesliga, I'd tell them it's a fantastic place to play and a fantastic country to live in.

"They are fantastic people too, so I'd always recommend that players take that opportunity if they get it. I hadn't heard that story but it doesn't surprise me."

Motherwell have taken on Rangers twice already this season but despite pushing Warburton's side close, have been left disappointed on both occasions.

But while McGhee reckons the Ibrox side are hitting their stride, he thinks his team can take confidence from their previous displays.

The ex-Celtic striker said: "It seems to me their players have taken a little bit of time coming to terms with the fact they're Rangers and just how different it is in the top division.

"As a former Old Firm player, you know every week it is the biggest game of the season for the opposition. Everybody and their granny turns up for those games.

"You have to handle that and it seems to me they are starting to mature into what is more recognisable to me as a Rangers team in terms of their attitude.

"Every game is different but our previous meetings gives us some encouragement.

"We can be very good or we can be rubbish. We just have to be very good on the day, so what's happened before isn't really of that much relevance.

"But psychologically it does give you a little bit of hope."
