RANGERS came from behind to book their place in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup with a 2-1 win over Motherwell at Ibrox.

Mark Warburton’s side looked to be heading out of the competition after Louis Moult put the Steelmen in front.

But a late double from Kenny Miller won it for the Light Blues as he turned in a Man of the Match performance to rescue the Gers.

After coming within minutes of the silverware at Hampden in May, Rangers had targeted another run to the National Stadium this term as they also look to clinch second spot in the Premiership.

And boss Warburton will hope this cup win will set his side off and running in the second half of the season despite a lacklustre performance.

Warburton handed Jon Toral his competitive bow as he joined Andy Halliday and Jason Holt in midfield and fellow loan arrival Emerson Hyndman had to settle for a spot on the bench.

There was also a start for Michael O’Halloran despite speculation over his future at Ibrox and interest from Well boss Mark McGhee in a loan switch this month.

Rangers started brightly and had plenty of possession but chances were hard to come by as Motherwell made it difficult for the Light Blues in the final third.

Lee Wallace saw an early effort deflected wide, while a header from Miller that clipped the bar was as close as Warburton’s side would come to breaking the deadlock.

It was O’Halloran who was involved in the most controversial moments of the first half, the forward denied a penalty despite loud protests from the Ibrox crowd.

Steven Hammell appeared to catch the 26-year-old as he tried to find space in the box but referee Craig Thomson waved away what looked like a strong claim for a spot kick.

At the other end, keeper Wes Foderingham was a virtual spectator as the Steelmen struggled to create, a low effort from Joe Chalmers all they could muster in a low-key first 45 minutes.

After the break, Rangers threatened twice in quick succession as O’Halloran burst forward but couldn’t pick out a team-mate before Barrie McKay’s cross was cleared by Hammell.

It was no surprise to see both managers turn to their bench in a bid to spark their sides into life as Josh Windass replaced Toral and Scott McDonald entered the action for the visitors.

Windass fired just wide of target minutes later before Martyn Waghorn replaced O’Halloran wide on the right of the Gers forward line.

Bournemouth kid Hyndman then got his first taste of Ibrox as he took over from Jason Holt but time was ticking for Warburton’s side as they looked to snatch a winner.

It was the travelling Well fans that had a reason to celebrate, though, as McGhee’s side took the lead through Moult.

Chris Cadden delivered a terrific cross from the right and the Steelmen striker rose to power a header beyond Foderingham and send the away section wild.

Rangers now had just minutes to save their Scottish Cup ambitions but Motherwell still stood firm as they edged towards the fifth round.

Keeper Craig Samson denied Miller as he looked to get a shot away but he could do nothing to stop the striker just minutes later.

Waghorn curled a cross into the area and Miller’s bullet header found the top corner as Rangers finally got their goal.

The Gers had Foderingham to thank just seconds later as he pulled off a smart double stop to deny Carl McHugh and McDonald.

And with just two minutes remaining Miller won it for Warburton’s side. Stephen McManus gifted the ball to Hyndman and the midfielder set Miller free.

The striker made no mistake as he kept his composure and found the bottom corner of Samson’s net.

Moult had another attempt in injury time but there was no way back for Motherwell as they saw their cup dreams shattered at Ibrox.
