YOU only get one chance to make a good first impression and Pedro Caixinha made the most of his at Ibrox on Monday.

I enjoyed listening to him and what he had to say during his press conference. But now he must walk the walk as well as talk the talk.

His lines about winning European trophies and reasons why he has joined the biggest club in Scotland – when he stated that Rangers are 144-years-old and have won 54 league titles – will have gone down well with the supporters. He had to endear himself to the fans right away and I like the messages that he has been putting across.

Pedro said that he wanted to finish second in the Premiership and win the Scottish Cup this season and there is no reason why Rangers can’t achieve both of those goals in the coming months.

Aberdeen are favourites to finish second, of course they are. But if Rangers can maintain their performance levels then they have a chance of moving up the table.

The game at Pittodrie in a couple of weeks is massive but we need to take care of Hamilton, Motherwell and Kilmarnock first before we can think about the Dons fixture.

The fans will have got a huge lift from the new manager coming in and the result on Sunday and I am sure they will turn out in their numbers once again at Ibrox this weekend.

Pedro needs to get off to a good start and to get the supporters on board. Rangers need to win games, but they need to do it with a bit of style as well.

I have heard a lot of comments from Rangers fans and there have been a lot on Radio Clyde over the last few days talking about the appointment.

There are supporters that aren’t convinced and fear that it is the wrong move. They say that Rangers won’t challenge Celtic with Pedro Caixinha as manager.

There is a bit of negativity in some quarters about this move, but that is mainly down to the fact that Pedro isn’t a household name here and he doesn’t really have a huge pedigree. There is no doubt that the supporters will give him a chance, though.

He has inherited a side that has underperformed this season and he has to try and get the best out of it in the next few weeks. Then he will be given a chance to build his own squad in the summer.

He will hold talks with Dave King shortly and the transfer strategy will be one of the most important things that they discuss as Rangers look to close the gap to Celtic.

I am sure Pedro would have been delighted with some aspects of the Old Firm game at the weekend, and maybe not so happy with some other things.

These players are fighting for their careers at Ibrox. A lot of them haven’t done enough to merit staying at the club so they have between now and the end of the season to prove themselves to the manager.

They have to impress him in training and play out of their skins in the games. They have to show the same commitment as they did on Sunday.

It is pointless playing well at Parkhead and getting all the plaudits and then letting your standards drop over the next few weeks and the manager will be stressing that point.

By all accounts, he is working them very hard and the players are loving it. It is something different, the training is different and players will respond to that.

This is a side that hasn’t beaten Ross County this season, a team that has drawn with Hamilton and St Johnstone and been beaten by Dundee and Inverness.

Too many points have been dropped against teams that Rangers are expected to beat and that is something that has to change between now and the end of the campaign.

You have to be right mentally when you face teams in this division. You have to be up for every single game at Rangers.

Too often this season that hasn’t been the case and teams found out how to play against us and were able to take points off us.

There has been a lack of fight at times but in the games against St Johnstone, Hamilton and Celtic, the players were working their socks off. That was down to Graeme Murty.

It reminds me a bit of Leicester City. After winning the league last season, they have been so poor this season and found themselves in a relegation battle.

All of a sudden, Claudio Ranieri is sacked and things have turned around. Now, with Craig Shakespeare in charge, they are playing like the team that won the title.

It is down to the attitude of the players. They haven’t performed all season but now a new man has come in and they have started to play again.

Rangers will hope that the same thing happens now that Pedro is in. If the players apply themselves correctly then Rangers can finish second and win the Scottish Cup.

And what a platform that would give Pedro and the players to build on going into the Europa League and the new Premiership campaign.
