RANGERS fans showed their support for Ibrox hero Fernando Ricksen on Saturday as he continues his battle against Motor Neurone Disease.

A crowd of just under 5,000 watched a Rangers Legends side take on an England Select at Highbury Stadium in Fleetwood as a host of former Light Blues stars pulled on their boots once again.

Ricksen was diagnosed with MND four years ago and, despite being given just months to live, has helped raise tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

The 40-year-old was given a huge ovation and guard of honour before the match and then sat in the dugout as England ran out 3-2 winners thanks to goals from Gavin McCann, Darren Anderton and Lee Hendrie.

Marvin Andrews opened the scoring for the Gers and there was a moment to remember for lucky fan Alex Dick as he rounded keeper Tony Warner to net the final goal of the afternoon.

Mr Dick was one of three Gers punters that paid £500 to play for the Legends side and all funds will go towards Ricksen’s MND charity.

Barca Bear and Evening Times columnist Derek Johnstone was also on hand to lend his support over the course of the weekend as fans got a chance to meet their heroes and pay tribute to Ricksen.

He said: “It was heart-warming to see such a large turnout for Fernando and I am sure he will have appreciated the backing that the Rangers fans gave him once again.

“That tells you how much the supporters think of Fernando and there was so many great players on show as well.

“He has shown incredible strength to fight this horrible disease and we all wish him and his family all the best.”
