THE challenge is new but the goal is the same. His surroundings have changed but his outlook won’t alter.

Alfredo Morelos became the sixth signing of the summer for Pedro Caixinha on Monday afternoon and the striker is arguably the most intriguing to date.

He has been preceded by the likes of Bruno Alves and Ryan Jack and could yet be followed by Graham Dorrans and Jamie Walker as Caixinha remodels his Rangers squad.

The 20-year-old arrives in Glasgow with an impressive record but a burgeoning reputation will count for little when his ability and mentality are put to the test this term.

His journey to Ibrox from Medellin, via a stint in Finland with HJK Helsinki, makes Morelos a curious prospect.

The Light Blue legions don’t know what to expect from their latest recruit. Morelos has no doubts that he can make a positive first impression, though.

He said: “As a number nine, I can hold off defenders, I’m mobile in and around the box.

“I’m strong up front and quick – I have a change of pace. The most important thing is that I score goals – when the opportunity is there, I score.

“I know that the supporters are really incredible and amazing – they come to support the team in every game and you always have to respect that and to make them happy in every game by winning.

“I know it is not possible to win every game, there will be draws and defeats, but it is important to make the fans happy and to finish top of the league.

“I know it’s a lot of pressure but usually we’re prepared for it in every game. I’m mentally prepared for it too.

“I know it’s very different here to the games I played in Finland, the pace of the game, it is all different. I’ll try to be mentally prepared in each training session and game. It’s something different and I need to take things day by day and match by match.”

Morelos may not be a big name in the game but the forward has lofty ambitions at club and international level.

His ultimate ambition is to follow the path of Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez and to represent the Colombian national side in the future. Before that dream can become a reality, he will have to showcase his talents on a Scottish stage.

The forward has been handed a three-year deal by Caixinha and he is determined to make the most of the chance he has been presented with at Ibrox.

Morelos said: “I’m very happy – I’m really grateful to God and my family who have supported me in the best way to do things well every day.

“This club has such a big support so I have to make the most of it. It’s safe to say that Rangers is a really big club and I’m happy with the support the fans have shown me already – it’s been the best. I want to show the fans here what I did every day in Finland – to grow more as a player and as a person.

“Of course, I did some research on the internet about the history and games. I know that it is a really big club and that they have played in really big tournaments.

“So I found out a lot of interesting things. It’s a really big club here so I want to make of and enjoy this opportunity, do things the best way and try to do well in every match and every training session, to win trophies and be a regular first team player.

“I know it won’t be easy. It will be difficult because other team-mates will also be focused on this.

“So I need to do things well every day and when I have the opportunity to play, to enjoy it and to continue to score goals and grow more as a person and a player.”

It will take time for Morelos to adjust to life at Ibrox both on and off the park but he has a chance to make an immediate name for himself in the coming weeks.

Rangers will return to Europa League action when they host Progres Niederkorn next Thursday and the countdown is well underway to the new Premiership campaign.

Morelos has had his first look at the blue sea of Ibrox. Now he must prove he will swim rather than sink this season.

“I’m really happy to be here,” he told RangersTV.

“As I said, it’s a really big club which has opened its doors to me and who have put their faith in me to come here and I want to show off more of my talents, characteristics and my football.

“The stadium is huge, beautiful. Everything I’ve seen is unbelievable. The pitch is incredible – you can see it is a really good surface and the stands are also amazing.

“So it’s wonderful and I hope to score a lot of goals here and to have the whole stadium celebrating.”
