PEDRO CAIXINHA has backed striker Alfredo Morelos to hit the goal trail for Rangers after he clinched his switch to Ibrox.

Morelos has agreed a three-year deal with the Light Blues after leaving HJK Helsinki and becomes the sixth signing of the summer for boss Caixinha.

The 20-year-old could make his competitive debut for the Gers when they face Progres Niederkorn in the first round of the Europa League next week.

Morelos arrives in Glasgow with an impressive record in the Finnish league and Caixinha is confident the South American striker can realise his potential in the coming months.

“Alfredo is a young and talented Colombian player,” he told RangersTV.

“He is only 20-years old but he has a fantastic goal scoring record in Finland, although the level is not as high as you have it in Scotland.

“He has gone from Under-17s to Under-20s with Colombia, who you should not forget are fifth in the FIFA rankings, and they have a lot of fantastic players, especially forwards.

“He was recommended to us by Jonatan Johansson and now he is with us and we believe he is going to help us. We believe he has a lot to learn to keep progressing with his capabilities and his potential.

“But, he is a player who can score goals, and someone like that is always amazing to have in your squad.

“He is a player who can act in several positions in the attack. He can play alone as number nine, he can play as the second striker, he can play as a double nine and he can also play in the wide areas.

“He is a powerful player who, if you attack with less space, he can find space, and vice versa. We want to have different options, and, once again the human side of the player needs to be present.

“I believe he speaks good English, but if not, then as I can speak Spanish I can be that ‘father figure’ which will be important for him to get the confidence in a new and demanding place, and in a huge and demanding club like Rangers.”
