PEDRO CAIXINHA is confident Rangers are ready and raring to go for the Premiership kick-off after a 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

The Light Blues rounded off their pre-season schedule with a deserved win against Carlos Carvalhal’s side as Josh Windass and Kenny Miller found the net in either half.

Rangers have recovered well from the setback of crashing out of the Europa League to Progres Niederkorn earlier this month and will now begin their league campaign with a trip to Fir Park this weekend.

Caixinha said: “Yes of course [we are ready for Motherwell]. We still have one more week and we have to respect the opponent. But at this club the only option is winning.

“That’s why it was important for us to conclude the week like this - with the result and the performance and how we controlled the game. Sometimes in a game you need to suffer and you know how to suffer and you have that quality and experience in the team to do that.

“I don’t need to answer [what has changed] to you. You just look at the match report and see the players and you see the difference.

“Also, they have had time for them to know each other. This is the first week from Wednesday until now that the team has been altogether.

“I told you I am not a magician but I am someone with a strong mentality and a winning mentality to take this club forward. But we need time and we know we have the right tools now.

“I’m not a guy who gets worried about the past. I cannot change the course of the past so I am not worried about it. I’m focused and I know that I can change the course of the future.”

The win over Wednesday was the latest step on the road to recovery for Rangers following their humiliating defeat in Luxembourg.

Caixinha’s side drew with Marseille last weekend before beating Watford in midweek and the Portuguese is pleased with the progress being made at Ibrox.

He said: “Not only in training but in matches. We have played who are terrific on the training pitch but when they get in a game they don’t do the same.

“But now we have players who train hard, work hard and play hard. That’s the main difference. But we know we were not the worst in those moments. We are not the best now. We need to keep working and focus.”

Caixinha has fielded a settled starting line-up in his last three warm-up fixtures but was forced into a change yesterday after defender James Tavernier picked up a knock against Watford.

Lee Hodson filled in at right-back against the Owls and will have to deputise at Fir Park if Tavernier doesn’t recover in time.

Caixinha said: “He received a kick in the Watford match and he was substituted in the middle of the first half.

“That’s why he did not play today but Lee did a fantastic job. We are waiting for the medical reports but we hope he will be back training on Tuesday.”

Several of Caixinha’s summer signings started at Hillsborough and the likes of Bruno Alves, Ryan Jack and Graham Dorrans again caught the eye in an impressive team display.

Winger Jamie Walker remains on Caixinha’s shopping list in the coming weeks and a move appears to be closer after he was dropped by Hearts boss Ian Cathro following speculation over his Tynecastle future.

Caixinha said: “I said previously that I’m not going to talk about players from other teams.

“We know what we want and we know the hard work and sacrifice that the chairman and the board are making. We know our targets and we know we still have a month until the end of the transfer window.”
