STEVEN WHITTAKER insists Hibernian always believed they could cause an Ibrox upset after they beat Rangers on Saturday.

Neil Lennon’s side emerged victorious from a controversial Premiership clash thanks to strikes from Simon Murray and Vykintas Slivka either side of a James Tavernier own goal.

It was a day to savour for the visitors as they followed up their opening weekend win over Partick Thistle and Whittaker was delighted with a deserved three points.

He said: “I’m not sure [if there is an Ibrox fear factor like there used to be].

“We came with a belief that we could win the game. I’m not sure how teams approached it when I was here before.

“The manager we have at the minute demands results, demands performances and the boys are stepping up to the plate at the minute. Long may that continue.

“Time will tell [if we can finish above Rangers]. We believe we have a great squad with good options. It’s one or two games into the season and we have started well.

“It’s on to the next one and keep going with it. If we can build that momentum and belief, get on that run, who knows what we can achieve?

“They are a great club with great players. We came out on top today but on another day it might be different.

“We are here to concentrate on ourselves. Hopefully we have a good season.”

The Premiership clash saw Whittaker return to Ibrox for the first time following his controversial Light Blues exit five years ago.

The defender was repeatedly booed by the home crowd throughout the afternoon but had a reason to celebrate in the end.

Whittaker said: “It’s just the pantomime of football and the way the fans see it, but there is nothing I can do about that. I can only affect things on the park and that’s what I tried to concentrate on.

“The manager stressed it was important that we all stayed on the park. There were a few incidents that maybe got out of hand but we managed to keep 11 on the park and that helped us in the end.”
