FORMER Rangers winger Barrie McKay says he is targeting a Scotland call-up after Nottingham Forest teammate Jason Cummings was selected for this week’s friendly against the Netherlands.

The 22-year-old earned his only international cap during a 3-0 friendly defeat to France last April, but is determined to force his way back into contention under new management.

Gordon Strachan departed the Tartan Army hotseat last month after failing in his bid to reach Russia 2018 and his successor is yet to be named, with Scottish FA Performance Director Malky Mackay taking the reins for Thursday’s clash against the Dutch on an interim basis.

McKay, who left Ibrox for Forest during the summer, has started the season brightly with four goals and seven assists in 14 league matches.

His club teammate Cummings was called up to the national squad last week and McKay admitted to the Nottingham Post that a return to the international fold remains a key objective.

“Yes definitely," he said. "It's a big achievement to play for your country and I've been in squads before so it's up to me to keep pushing and get myself into the squad.

“I think in my position there is a lot of strength in depth in the squad and a lot of really good players. It's up to me to keep pushing them and if I can get myself into the squad then great.

“People probably will take notice and as long as I'm doing well for Forest you will get other people talking and noticing you. So it's up to me to keep doing well here and then the rest will take care of itself. That's obviously the aim, to get promotion and get back into the Scotland squad.”
