Graeme Murty has had very few options in recent weeks due to injuries to key players like Graham Dorrans, Ryan Jack, Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace.

He has had to give Jamie Barjonas some first team run-outs. That has obviously been great for the young lad. He is a good player and will benefit from the experience.

But adding Sean Goss and Jamie Murphy, if his deal goes through, to the Rangers squad gives Murty some quality options for the second half of the season.

So, too, does Joe Dodoo, Andy Halliday and Michael O’Halloran returning from loan.

Nobody at Ibrox will ever admit that Celtic, who are currently 11 points clear at the top of Ladbrokes Premiership, can’t be caught. But, realistically, it looks like being a fight with Aberdeen to finish runners-up.

When the league comes down to the nitty gritty towards the end of the season, when the race to finish second heats up, having alternatives will be hugely important.

O’Halloran has never managed to hold down a first team place at Rangers for long. But his pace could be a potent weapon if it is harnessed properly.

Halliday, meanwhile, has maybe been played out of position since arriving at Ibrox two and half seasons ago. But he has certainly got great ability. Does Graeme has some thoughts about how to get the best out of him?

Joe, meanwhile, is a big striker and that is something that has been missing. He has scored goals in the past. Can he do it on a consistent basis? We shall see. He has certainly shown he is prepared to work hard for the team up front and put himself about.

Dodoo and Halliday haven’t played many games. O’Halloran has been injured. But all three of them will be thankful of the chance to show what they are capable of at Rangers and will be desperate to do well. They will be fired up.

Bringing in Goss and Murphy and getting the loan players back means Rangers have got five new men to choose from. I imagine the young lads, the likes of David Bates, Barjonas, Ryan Hardie and Ross McCrorie, will still get game time as well.

The January transfer window is only a week old and already Rangers are in a far healthier position.
