RANGERS are set to make their fifth signing of the January window as Greg Docherty closes in on a switch to Ibrox.

Boss Graeme Murty saw his side move up to second spot in the Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Aberdeen at Ibrox last night.

And he should have the Hamilton midfielder in his ranks for the trip to Ross County this weekend after Rangers agreed a £680,000 deal.

Murty said: “It’s another bit off business for another young hungry player desperate to enhance our group.

“When you saw the players gelling and the improvements we’ve made, it’s an exciting time for players – and for me as a manager.

‘”I want to manage people who are hungry to improve.

“I don’t know if it will be the end of our business.”

Murty has added Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy, Russell Martin and Jason Cummings to his squad already this month and handed the quartet their debuts against the Dons.

But there was no place in the squad for defender Danny Wilson as he ponders his future at Ibrox.

Wilson is out of contract at the end of the campaign and is attracting interest from Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids.

David Bates is also in the final months of his Light Blues contract and Sunderland have been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old.

Murty said: “We’ve talked to David and his reps. He’s a young man we want to retain.

“We’re also in talks with Danny about his contract. He has other options. But until those things are tied up, they’ll remain in house.

“What I don’t want to do is enter into speculation that affects players.

“I picked a team to win the game. It’ up to the players not playing to go and get in that team.”

It has been a productive month of transfer business for Murty so far and Rangers marked their return to competitive action in style last night.

Morelos headed the hosts in front before Tavernier clinched a deserved win from the penalty spot with 15 minutes remaining.

The first half effort from Morelos was his 13th goal of the campaign following his move from HJK Helsinki in the summer.

The Colombian has admitted that he could seek to move at the end of the season and has set his sights on a switch to the Premier League.

Murty said: “Alfredo is a goal scorer. If he misses one, you never think he’s going to go missing.

“He could have had a hat-trick, it just wasn’t to be. Jason Cummings on the bench was ready to go and wanting to push Alfredo.

“That’s the competition we require if we’re to close the gap ad get to a better place.

“Unless someone walks in with a barrowload of cash – and a big barrowload – he will be a Rangers player.

“But I want players who have aspirations to be in a better place. Hopefully we can get better at Rangers.

“But the big prize is to play in the Premier League. You can safeguard your family’s future with one move.

“If we have someone good enough to go there, it’s fantastic for us.”

Victory at Ibrox was the third Rangers have recorded over Aberdeen this term and moved them ahead of Derek McInnes’ side on goal difference.

A trip to Dingwall is next on the Gers’ agenda and Murty is pleased with the direction his side are heading in as they returned to action with a deserved win.

He said: “The players we have in the building are pushing us to be better. That’s really exciting for me and should be exciting for Rangers fans.

“We’re at the start of what could be a very satisfying journey.

“I’ll analyse the game, look at where we were good, see where we need to improve.

“We won’t face many teams with a front four that carry as much threat as them.”
