RANGERS defender Luca Gasparotto is set to extend his loan spell with Morton until the end of the Championship campaign.

The Canadian has been one of the Ton’s top performers this season as they have made an impressive start in the second tier.

Gasparotto was due to return to Ibrox next month to challenge for a place in Mark Warburton’s squad as the Gers set their sights on the Championship crown.

But boss Jim Duffy has revealed he has reached an agreement to keep the 20-year-old at Cappielow for the second half of the campaign.

“I’ve spoken to Luca and he would be delighted to continue until the end of the season," he told the Greenock Telegraph.

“Rangers are happy for that to happen as well, so unless anything significant changes in that department — which can happen in football — then he’ll stay with us until the end of the season.

“I like to sit down face to face with the player in those situations to see how they feel — if they’re a bit hesitant, enthusiastic or whatever — and he was very enthusiastic when I spoke to him.

“He’s absolutely delighted and thoroughly enjoying his time with us, and we feel he’s done very well so we’ll look forward to having him. We are looking to get that done as soon as possible.

“The first thing you want to do as a young player is to play regular first-team football and build your confidence and get game experience. He’s only 20 and that’s what he’s doing.

“After that, you see how far your ability can take you, you can look and see what level you can possibly reach, and to do that you have to go and put in the hours to achieve it.

“We have given him a couple of pointers on what he has to work on, certain aspects of his game and what’s required to move to the top level.

“That’s ultimately his ambition to go and play at the top level, so I’ve given him a couple of things to take on board and he’s aware of that.”
