FORMER Rangers and Hibernian midfielder Dean Shiels has joined Dunfermline Athletic on a one-year deal.

The Pars announced the capture of the Northern Ireland international on Monday after a half-season spell with Canadian side Edmonton.

Shiels departed Ibrox last summer after helping the club to Ladbrokes Premiership promotion and the 32-year-old made 125 appearances for the Light Blues during a four-year spell.

The former Kilmarnock and Doncaster man joined Irish outfit Dundalk following his release, before signing for Edmonton in February.

Dunfermline got their season off to the perfect start on Saturday, thrashing Elgin City 6-0 to open their Betfred Cup campaign with a bang.

They travel to East Fife for the second match of their Group B campaign tomorrow evening.
