A few things have changed since those epic European Cup games Rangers played against Marseille during the 92/93 season.

Halcyon days indeed. The game in Glasgow was one of the epic European ties played at Ibrox in what was still the relatively new Champions League.

It was a very different format back then, with Rangers having to beat Lyngby and then Leeds United to reach the group stage where the winners of the two sections would play in the final.

While it is a fantastic memory, it is also a painful one of just how narrowly Rangers missed out on a final place, pipped in the group by the eventual winners Marseille.

Not that the French champions could beat Rangers, home or away.
That November night in Glasgow, Rangers looked dead and buried when they were 2-0 down with an hour gone, thanks to goals from Alen Boksic and Rudi Voller.

But the Gers staged an amazing comeback, with two goals in just a couple of minutes, one from teenage substitute Gary McSwegan, who came on for Trevor Steven, who was back at Rangers having played with Marseille, and the second from Mark Hateley.

But that Marseille side – which was to French football what PSG are now – read like an all-stars team.

Apart from Boksic and Voller, Olympique had Fabien Barthez, Basile Boli, Jocelyn Angloma, Marcel Desailly, Franck Sauzee, Didier Deschamps and Abedi Pele.

An awesome squad of players, and you couldn’t begrudge them getting to the final and winning it.

Actually, in the circumstances, you could after rumours emerged of match-fixing claims involving Marseille owner Bernard Tapie, allegations that even today leave a bitter taste in the mouth.

But there is no getting away from the fact that the team itself was a collection of superstars.
