When Bruno Alves was signed by Rangers, I said he should be appointed the captain of Rangers.

No ifs, no buts, and certainly no delays. Alves is Pedro Caixinha’s man, and if you bring a player of his experience, stature and reputation to the club – especially one who delayed his arrival because he was still playing for Portugal in the Confederations Cup – then you need to make him your leader on the pitch.

Lee Wallace has done well over recent years. But he didn’t have a great season just gone mostly through injury.

Nothing against Lee, but for me Alves is the standout candidate – so why stall making the call?

All it has led to is unwanted speculation around the role, around Wallace and among the fans. They deserve to know.

For me, you are best served with a captain who is playing in central midfield or defence.

They see what is happening, face on, and are able to communicate easily with those around them, not isolated from one flank or the other.

Rangers have always gone for imposing figureheads as skipper: John Greig, Terry Butcher, Richard Gough, Davie Weir. Alves fits the bill. So come on, give him his place.
