WES FODERINGHAM admits victory against Celtic today would count for nothing if Rangers can’t put together a consistent run of Premiership form.

The Light Blues head into the first Old Firm fixture of the campaign five points adrift of Brendan Rodgers’ side in the top flight.

And keeper Foderingham knows the Gers need to improve across the board if they are to challenge their Glasgow rivals over the course of the season.

He said: “The ambition is to finish as high as we can and who knows where that is going to be at the minute? No doubt we need to get a higher points tally than we got last season.

“The gap last season was way too big, we know that. We can only focus on what we are doing and the more matches we win the higher up we will be in the league.

“There is no point in winning the Old Firm match if you are going to lose against Partick Thistle or lose against Motherwell. We need to make sure as many points as we can across the board, not just in the Old Firm matches.

“It (beating Celtic) is a direct way of [closing the gap]. But, as I said, there is no point in winning all your matches against Celtic if you are going to drop points elsewhere.”

It has been a mixed start to the campaign so far for Rangers as they have dropped points to Hibernian, Hearts and Partick Thistle.

And Foderingham knows a derby victory at Ibrox would be a major boost for Pedro Caixinha’s side.

He said: “Listen, they’re a top team. They’ve been unbeaten for a while now and you can’t do that if you’re a bad side.

“But we strengthened during the summer and we’re better-placed now to challenge more than we did last year and that’s what we’ll be looking to do.

“The first Old Firm meeting of the season is always the most difficult because everyone is a little apprehensive and you don’t know how the game’s going to go.

“However, we’re prepared and we’re confident and looking forward to it.”
