THERE will be a lot of conversations between Steven Gerrard and his players during the ten-day pre-season trip to Spain.

And one of the most important could be the one the manager has with Alfredo Morelos. It could well determine if the striker has a future with Rangers.

Steven has the winning mentality and mindset that I want to see in the Rangers side next season and he will get that over to the squad while they are in Spain. He needs to get into their heads and he will learn a lot about his players over the next week or so.

When he sits down with Morelos, he will want to know where his mind is at and where he sees himself next season and beyond.

Does he want to be here or does he not? If Morelos is humming and hawing, if he says he wants to play in England or abroad, then Rangers should sell him.

The last thing you need, and I am sure the last thing the managers wants, is somebody that is not happy and that you won’t get anything out of.

In that situation, if there is money on the table then you have to cash in. What if he stays, doesn’t perform and his value drops?

Rangers turned down offers from China for Morelos during the January transfer window and his form dipped in stages during the second half of the season.

It wasn’t an easy situation for him to handle and Rangers will be keen to avoid another saga, if you like, surrounding one of their most prized assets this summer.

If Morelos says to Steven that he wants to be part of his plans, that he is looking forward to working under him and that he is ready to play for him, then he stays and he looks to improve from his first season at Ibrox.

Anything other than that, he goes. If he has to tell the manager he wants to be here, he will concentrate and work hard and if he does that then he stays and Steven looks to bring in a player to work with him.

I am sure Steven will sit down with Alfredo and will chat to him quite a lot. By the time they have finished, both parties will know where they stand.

I think the manager will want to see what Alfredo can do but if Rangers get multi-million pound offers for him again then he may feel it is too good to turn down.

People forget that Morelos is 21. He is not 25, 26 and a player that has gained a lot of experience in the game.

He is still learning his way and for him to come in and score as many goals as he did, and put in some of the performances he did, last season says a lot about him.

I know he missed a lot of chances, and he will be remembered for the sitters against Celtic. That is unfair, though, and personally, I would keep him if he is committed to the club.

If he stays, I am sure he can have another good season and better his goal return next term but Rangers certainly need to add to the attack whatever happens.

Steven has gone through the spine of the team with his signings so far and he will have strikers in mind to add more goals to the side. That is the area we are weakest in right now.

A lot depends on how the manager wants to play. Could he go with a 3-5-2 next season? We will have to wait and see.

If so, you bring someone in to play alongside Morelos and, with the players that have come in so far, you have the makings of a solid side there.

Rangers have spent a bit of money so far this summer but there is always a premium when you buy strikers and a good one won’t come cheap, both in terms of the transfer fee and the wages.

If Steven feels he can get more out of Morelos, then I am sure he will look to keep him and then bring someone in to play alongside him and to help him out.

One thing is for sure, he needs to sign a striker. How many, and what kind, will depend on how he sets the side up, though.
