TODD LUMSDEN was named as Albion Rovers' new manager after Paul Martin quit for health reasons just minutes after ensuring the club retained its Irn-Bru Second Division status on a dramatic day at Cliftonhill.

Rovers went into the second leg of the play-off final against Stranraer trailing 2-0, but roared to a 3-1 victory to level the tie before eventually winning 5-3 on penalties.

And, after taking time off in February due to suspected meningitis, Martin announced yesterday his decision to take a break from the game after four years in charge at Rovers.

He said: "I missed a month of the season in February through illness and the illness has come back again. I just can't seem to shake it off. I think the right thing to do for me, my family and the club is to stake a step back.

"The club is in safe hands. Todd Lumsden will take over. We have a great, steady ship there with my chairman. It's a fantastic day for the club."

Rovers chairman Frank Meade added: "Paul is leaving us after a wonderful few years where he has taken this club to a fantastic level. He has not been well for a number of months and he was always going yesterday regardless of the result.

"He will be welcome back here any time, but the most important thing for him just now is to keep himself fit again."

Scott Chaplain and Robert Love put Rovers ahead before Stranraer's Martin Grehan pulled one back.

Chaplain's second put the game into extra time and, in a dramatic finale, home skipper Ciaran Donnelly hit the decisive penalty to secure his side's Second Division status.
