GLASGOW Warriors No.8 Adam Ashe is determined to make every bit as big an impact for Scotland this week as his Edinburgh rival David Denton did last week.

Denton was man of the match in the 28-22 defeat by Ireland, and with time running out before the final squad of 31 for the Rugby World Cup is announced, Ashe knows that Saturday’s game against Italy may be his last chance to impress head coach Vern Cotter.

But he is equally aware that he could spoil those chances if he plays as an individual rather than as part of a team.

After losing their last six games, Scotland are in serious need of a morale-boosting victory in Turin - and they can only expect to get one if they all put in a disciplined performance.

“You can’t be too greedy or selfish as a player,” Ashe said after being named in a squad of 25, from which the starting 15 will be announced today.

“You need to stick to the structure and what you’ve looked at during the week as that’s the way you are going to win games.

“Individually we need to look at team before self - which is tough as you want to get on the ball at every phase and make every tackle. But you need to do your job. That’s maybe not making a tackle or sitting on the defensive line and let someone else carry. It can be difficult, but that’s just the way it is.”

Both Ashe and Denton can play at No.6 as well as 8, and it may well be that head coach Vern Cotter decides because of that versatility to take them both to the World Cup.

Even so, Ashe knows he needs to fight to stake his claim as one of the first-choice back-row forwards.

“He played well against Ireland and he’s set the bar high,” he said of Denton. “I want to bring my own thing to the game. Dents is playing well at the moment and that does put an extra bit of pressure on me to step up.

“I’m just looking forward to getting out there. You don’t want to put yourself under too much pressure.

"I’m going to try and stick to doing the normal things that go through your head before any game even though there’s a lot of pressure.

“I obviously want to be included in the World Cup squad. But this is just another game and you want to stick to the things which have taken you this far in the first place.”

Scotland were beaten at home by Italy during the Six Nations and have now lost six on the bounce following that defeat in Ireland.

Ashe knows that dismal record needs to change as soon as possible.

“This weekend is a game which we should be winning,” he added. “We lost narrowly in the Six Nations but personally I’m targeting this as a game we need to win.”
