GLASGOW Warriors scrum-half Henry Pyrgos has signed a new contract with the club - and is confident they can challenge for more trophies over the next couple of seasons. The 27-year-old made his comeback from injury off the bench in the Warriors’ 23-14 Champions Cup win over Racing 92 last Saturday, and sees that result as proof of the squad’s ability to compete with the best clubs in Europe.

“What we’ve done on the field in the last couple of years is exciting,” Pyrgos said after agreeing a deal that ties him to Glasgow until the summer of 2019. “Winning the league two years ago was up there with the highlights of my career and I feel we can do that again.

“It was great to go away to Racing with the superstars in their team, a side full of brilliant players, and go there and do a job. We’ve had good multiple wins over the years, but the challenge is backing it up.

“For me it’s all about winning trophies at this stage. It’s a cliché, but once you’ve tasted success you really do want it again. I feel we have a group of players who can really do that, so I want to be part of that.”

Warriors coach Gregor Townsend will move on to take charge of Scotland in the summer, but Pyrgos has already talked to new coach Dave Rennie and is confident about his plans for the team. “It is unusual when you stay at the same club and the head coach changes. Of all the transitions that could have been, it’s way up there with the best.

“Gregor and Dave have worked reasonably close over the past couple of years. They have similar ideas. We met Dave briefly a few months ago and told he us the stuff he would like to take forward and it’s exciting.

“Gregor has been a fantastic coach and I’ve learned a fantastic amount from him. We’ll now get the opportunity to work with Dave, and I’m sure he’ll teach us a lot more about rugby and take our game.

“I love being here and I know how much it means to the guys to play each week. It’s nice to play somewhere the guys are so committed to playing and getting better and trying to go out there and win trophies.

“When I thought about re-signing, I thought about what I want to do and I want to win things. Winning where you have been a long time matters more, I think.”

Townsend, who appointed Pyrgos joint captain along with Jonny Gray at the start of the season, was delighted to have secured the services of the No 9. “It’s brilliant news for the club that Henry has signed for another two years,” he said. “He is one of our leaders and has developed a huge amount in his time at the club.

“Now he is helping the club continue to improve and evolve on and off the pitch. There is a lot more to come from him on the playing side and we are really fortunate to have such a high quality group of scrum-halves right now.”

Townsend will announce his team tomorrow for Friday night’s match against Racing, who are currently bottom of Pool One. The Warriors are a point behind Munster, who have a game in hand.
