GLASGOW Warriors have signed back-row forwards Lewis Wynne and Matt Smith on professional contracts.

Both players began the campaign as members of the Scottish Rugby Academy, but Wynne has featured regularly for Gregor Townsend's side with ten appearances so far.

Wynne, who can play anywhere in the back row, has signed a contract tying him to the Scotstoun club until May 2019.

He is joined by Matt Smith in penning a pro deal, although the Scotland youth international is yet to make his debut for the Warriors.

Smith, who is currently playing for Glasgow Hawks in the BT Premiership, has signed a contract until May 2018.

The pair were teammates in the Stirling County team that won the National Youth Cup in 2013 and have made their way through the ranks together.

"It’s a dream come true to sign a contract with Glasgow and to be able to say that I'm a professional rugby player is a fantastic feeling," Wynne told glasgowwarriors.org.

“At the start of the season I didn’t expect to get the opportunities I have, but I feel I have given a good account of myself and I've learnt so much as part of the squad.

“Going forward I want to pull on the Warriors jersey as much as I can and continue to learn and develop.”

Matt Smith added: “I’m delighted to sign my first professional contract and I'm looking forward to showing Warriors fans what I can do.

“I'm learning all the time and I'm excited about the opportunity to develop as a member of the Warriors squad.”

Head coach Gregor Townsend, who will leave the club to succeed Vern Cotter as Scotland boss at the end of the season, welcomed the latest academy graduates to secure professional deals with Glasgow.

“It is a testament to the work that is put in from the coaches and players in the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy, that two more players have come through and earned the opportunity to become professional players," he said.

“Lewis has taken the opportunities he's had already this season and works incredibly hard at training and during games.

“Matt has shown in a Scotland U20s shirt just what he is capable of and he will flourish by spending time with the back-row players we have here at Glasgow.”
