The Scotland lock suffered hamstring damage but team doctor James Robson said last night: "Richie underwent a scan which confirmed a grade two tear of one of his hamstring muscles.

"The normal period of rehab from injuries like that is about eight weeks.

"We have kept his club Sale Sharks fully appraised of the situation with a view to playing before the end of the season."

Meanwhile, Andy Nicol says Scotland's discipline must improve if they are to have any hope of beating France in their Six Nations finale in Paris on Saturday.

Scott Johnson's side were beaten 28-18 by the Welsh at the weekend.

Success in Saturday's 8pm kick-off would not only provide Scotland with their first win in Paris in 14 years but give them a creditable second-placed championship finish.

Nicol, a former Scotland ace, said: "After conceding 16 penalties, the Scotland side struggled to gain meaningful possession and decent field position.

"We did not turn the scoreboard over. We were guilty of giving cheap penalties away and that undermined the team.

"That can't happen again in Paris or we will pay a heavy price.

"The French are bottom of the table with just one point and they will be determined to get the home win.

"So Scottish discipline, as well as commitment, will be vital."

The former scrum-half was scathing about the performance of South African whistler Craig Joubert.

Nicol said: "He seemed to ping Scotland all the time at the scrum for early engagement. Yet, late on, Adam Jones was guilty of an early engagement and got away with it."
