New Scotland head coach Vern Cotter has already spelled out what he expects from his squad ahead of his first match in charge, according to stand-off Ruaridh Jackson.

Jackson flew to the United States to join his international team-mates in the wake of Glasgow Warriors' Pro12 final defeat to Leinster on Saturday after he swapped places in the split-squad tour set-up with new Edinburgh Rugby signing Tom Heathcote.

Jackson, who was originally selected for the Argentina and South Africa leg of the four- match tour, will now get an immediate chance to impress Cotter when the Scots face the USA at the 22,000-capacity BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Saturday.

The 26-year-old, who will join London Wasps on his return from international duty, revealed the 52-year-old New Zealander has already made an impact on his new charges.

Jackson said: "He's had his first meeting with us as a group.

"He's a man of few words but when he speaks he demands respect.

"He's got a proven track record, especially with Clermont Auvergne in France over the past few years, and he will bring something good and a lot of knowledge to the party.

"I'm looking forward to working with him."

Scotland face the USA, Canada, Argentina and South Africa over consecutive weekends this month as the countdown begins to next year's Rugby World Cup in England - where the Scots will face the USA and the Springboks in Pool B.

Jackson has warned that the tour opener in the Texan heat will present an instant challenge for the tourists.

He added: "I'm pretty excited. It's going to be pretty hot - I think more than 30 degrees - so a few Scottish boys could be struggling.

"It will be a difficult test. They are a big, physical team and bring a lot of aggression and have got a lot of pace.

"Right now we are getting back to bonding and catching up with boys we don't see very often."
