Sean Maitland arrived in the Scotland camp with plenty of ideas on what is needed to get their RBS 6 Nations campaign off the mark after replacing injured Glasgow team-mate Sean Lamont.

The winger has come in along with Edinburgh forward Stuart McInally as Scotland attempt the difficult task of getting their first point of the tournament when they take on England at Twickenham on Saturday evening.

British and Irish Lions cap Maitland has not played since suffering a shoulder injury in a European Champions Cup clash with Bath on January 27 but he has used his time on the sidelines to good effect by analysing Scotland's 22-19 defeat by Italy in the most recent of three defeats in the championship.

And Maitland believes they need to adopt a more systematic attacking approach against England.

"We just need to execute our attacking play a bit more," he told the Scottish Rugby Union's YouTube channel.

"I think we need to go down there with an attacking mindset as well. Probably against Italy our shape wasn't the best.

"We were sort of going in ones or twos and didn't really have a clear direction.

"But it just comes down to the basics done well. England kick a lot and make you play and try to force mistakes.

"We need to find that right balance of knowing when to kick and knowing when to attack, and just getting our shape right, filling the field and trying to attack them.

"We have to go down there and have an attacking mindset if we want to take that cup home."

Maitland has experience of achieving at Twickenham to lend credibility to his advice, scoring a debut try there in a 38-18 defeat two years ago.

"It was a bit of a blur, it went so fast," the 26-year-old said. "With 85-90,000 people there, it was an amazing place to make my debut, especially against England.

"I had mixed feelings, like scoring my first try on my debut but not the team performance we wanted, coming away with a loss.

"It seems so long ago because it has gone so fast, but hopefully I get another opportunity this week."

Lamont was ruled out of the remaining Six Nations games against England and Ireland after suffering a knee injury during Glasgow's 26-5 win over Zebre in the Guinness Pro12 on Friday night.

McInally comes into the squad as cover for hooker Ross Ford, who is fighting to overcome the back spasm he suffered against Italy.

The 24-year-old has scored three tries in seven appearances for Edinburgh this season and started at hooker during their weekend win over Treviso after being converted from a number eight.

Glasgow back Peter Horne is also being monitored by the Scotland medical team after suffering concussion against Zebre.
