GREGOR TOWNSEND reckons there's much more to come from his Glasgow Warriors following their opening day triumph over Leinster.

In a rematch of last season's PRO12 final in which the Irish side romped to victory, it was the Scots who came out on top this time round to kick off the Guinness PRO12 campaign with a dramatic 22-20 victory.

Despite being 19-3 up at the interval thanks to tries from Peter Horne, Jonny Gray and stand-in skipper Josh Strauss, it took the boot of Stuart Hogg deep into stoppage time to seal the points.

More than 5,000 crammed into Scotstoun to witness Warriors banish the demons of that dark day in Dublin back in May.

And while getting the better of Leinster this time round will be seen as a massive step in the right direction, Townsend believes things can still get better for his hardworking band of players. He said: "It was a great win. We were playing against the champions and to get any win against them in whatever way is a massive boost for us.

"We scored nicely worked tries and I thought the support play was good. We got on other players' shoulders, we had short passes.

"Against that Leinster defence, you have to be very innovative and accurate to get in behind it.

"Our forwards and backs combined well and it was great to see us score three tries.

"When Leinster get their game going it becomes a great match, I thought Nigel Owens refereed the game well.

"For the first game of the season there was a lot of quality in there and we'll surely get better."

Townsend admitted his men took the foot off the gas for a spell in the second half, a change in performance which allowed the Irish side to take a one-point lead as the game reached its climax, only for Hogg to rescue matters with the last kick of the match.

Despite the dip in form in the second half, Townsend was still full of praise for the efforts of his team to dig in and grind out a win whne it appeared to be unlikely.

He told Warriors TV: "Yeah there was a drop-off in the second half, but I was really pleased with our intent at the start of the game. We looked sharp, we played high-tempo rugby and we came close to scoring more than 20 points in that first half.

"The second half didn't flow for both teams. There was a strong wind and we didn't deal with it well. We did drop off in that last 10 or 15 minutes.

"But I'm delighted with the effort at the end and our character to come back and win."

Results over the weekend have Warriors joint third in the PRO12 table along with Connacht and Scottish rivals Edinburgh, who beat Munster 14-13 in Limerick on Friday night.

Next up for Townsend's men is a trip on Sunday to face Cardiff Blues, who defeated Zebre 41-26 in Parma, Italy, yesterday.
