DTH van der Merwe has urged Glasgow to record a perfect 10 so they can figure further in continental competition.

Warriors host Montpellier this Sunday in their penultimate Pool Four game in the European Rugby Champions Cup.

Only the top team from each section and the best three runners-up progress to the knockout stage, a feat the Scotstoun club have never managed to accomplish.

They currently sit on 10 points behind Toulouse, with second-placed Saracens, Leinster and Racing Metro currently ahead of them on points in their respective groups.

Van der Merwe is fully aware the need for Warriors to land two wins from two against Montpellier and Bath, but the South African has made it clear that at least one bonus point - but ideally two - will be required if Glasgow are to progress.

He said: "It is clear to us we need nine points out of our next two games.

"We are not just going to go just for the nine points, though. We want to get 10 points out of it if we can and have to play our absolute best.

"It is slightly easier to get that at home with the Glasgow faithful behind us. It did not matter whether we were home or away this weekend. It is about sticking to our plan and trying to get five points from each of the next two games.

"Obviously it easier to get that bonus at home. It's something we have to be able to push for and try to get."

This season has seen clear progression for Glasgow in Europe, yet that will count for nothing in van der Merwe's eyes if Warriors don't earn a tangible reward for their efforts.

Early victories over both Montpellier and Bath lit up the start of their campaign like never before, however two defeats against Toulouse within the space of a week have brought a more measured view to their Euro outlook.

Van der Merwe remains undeterred, though.

"I think this has definitely been the best year so far," said the 28-year-old. "I said it to the players earlier in the season when we played rounds one and two - wins in rounds one and two are the key to making five and six work for us. We've never been in with a shout in rounds five and six.

"This year, everyone is focused on making it out of the pool. We said to ourselves that we didn't want to come to rounds five and six and say 'what if' or 'we could have done better here or there'.

"I think we are in a good place at the moment and hopefully it is a good season for us."

Glasgow have stuttered slightly in recent weeks, a fact that was highlighted in the 1872 Cup second leg defeat to Edinburgh on January 2.

Yet there seems to be signs of progression again, with the 22-7 victory over Scarlets on Friday proof that Gregor Townsend's team seem to have rediscovered their magic touch.

Van der Merwe added: "I think we maybe deviated away from our game against Edinburgh away.

"It wasn't the greatest result for us. We maybe focused on the wrong areas of play.

"Coming back to the Scarlet game, apart from the two minutes before half-time it was one of our best performances, especially in the conditions.

"A lot of people have talked as if Glasgow had a shocker, but were still on track. Yes, we lost a game but we move on from it and get back to winning ways."
