GLASGOW head coach Gregor Townsend cursed his team's inability to capitalise on a promising second-half display after going down to Scarlets.

Warriors had recorded six wins from seven Guinness Pro12 games prior to their trip to Llanelli but slipped to a 19-9 defeat.

After trailing to their hosts 9-3 at the break, the below-par Scots fought their way back into the match and drew level on 60 minutes with penalties from Peter Horne.

But they were unable to build on the momentum and Scarlets sealed their win with the help of a late Rory Pitman try.

It was a disappointing result and performance and Glasgow head coach Townsend struggled to hide his frustration.

He said: "There were times when we did show real energy and played well tactically but there were other times, especially when we didn't have the ball, where our play dropped below the required standard.

"It was a shame we couldn't kick on once we got back to 9-9. Scarlets ended up controlling the last 20 minutes.

"It was a frustrating night because we had trained and prepared for it really well but we were not consistent enough during the game."

He added: "There is huge disappointment from the players and ourselves. We knew it was going to be tough game but we felt we could have done better.

"We came out in the second half with the right energy and played in the right areas. But when we got to 9-9 we made a couple of mistakes and Scarlets upped the pace of their game."

The result leaves the Warriors three points off pacesetters Ospreys after the Welsh club's 25-16 loss to Ulster in Belfast.

This Sunday 10th-place Newport Gwent Dragons come to Scotstoun in the Pro-12. After that is the vital Rugby Champions Cup tie against Stade Toulousain in France.

Townsend added: "We know we have to keep working hard, no matter who we're playing.

"Next week we'll have another opportunity to win against the Dragons. They beat us last year so we'll need to be strong."

Townsend also told GlasgowWarriors.org: "It will be our last match before December, which is a huge month for us.

"A few players did well against Scarlets and have now put their hands up for possible selection for those key games."
