SOUTHAMPTON have opened talks with Celtic with a view to turning Jos Hooiveld's loan into a permanent move.
The Championship club, who signed the Dutch defender on a temporary basis in August, made contact with the Parkhead side over the weekend.
Both clubs have now entered discussions over a transfer fee for the player, who is under contract in Glasgow until the summer of 2013.
Hooiveld, who moved to Celtic from AIK in January 2010, failed to win a permanent place in Neil Lennon's team.
However, the 28-year-old has been a hit on the south coast, helping Saints race to a five-point lead at the top of the division.
lEx-Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink has returned to former club PSV Eindhoven on a deal until the end. He was freed in the summer by Austrian club Rapid Vienna.
